Can't access the App Store? Although the app is not officially distributed elsewhere, I can make an exception and prepare a standalone build, notarized by Apple. Reach out to me to check if you are eligible for getting the app via an alternative distribution channel.
The application is built for macOS Sequoia 15.2 or newer. Some core screen capture features provided by Apple are not available in earlier versions of the operating system.
Any Apple hardware compatible with macOS Sequoia should run the app without any issues.
Yes, the app is available for free on the Mac App Store. All capture and recording features are included in the free version. However, to create recordings longer than one minute, you will need to activate the Unlimited features pack. Additionally, the free version limits the resolution of screen recordings to 1080p.
You can unlock all features from applicaiton settings, accessible by clicking on the settings button at the top right corner of the main window.
Run Recorder.app and use the Add input button at the bottom of the main window. Choose what you would like to record from a variety of presented options, including display, window, system audio, camera, and microphone.
If you choose a display or window option, you will be able to select it using your mouse. For camera and microphone, the app will present a list of available sources to add to your recording, including internal (like built-in camera or microphone) and external devices (like your iPhone camera).
You can add as many input sources as you want. Click the Record button to start recording.
After finishing a recording, the app presents a window with a list of past recordings. This window can also be accessed later by clicking an recordings button on the main window's toolbar.
By default, recordings are saved to your user's directory "~/Movies/Recorder app"
and categorized by date. You can change the default output directory in the app settings.
Recorder.app uses high-performance file formats and codecs for the best quality and compatibility with post-processing software. HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) is used to encode the screen video. Audio and video are saved to MPEG-4 files unless you record with transparency. In the latter case, QuickTime files are used for compatibility reasons.
Once you add a screen capture to your recording, you will be able to further configure it. Click on the settings button for the given input source to open the configuration sheet. You will be able to select the video output format, capture resolution, desired framerate, include or exclude system UI elements from your recordings, and more. Additionally, you will be able to filter the captured content using app and window filters.
Open the screen capture settings for the given input source by clicking on the settings button. At the bottom of the settings sheet, you will find an option to select content filtering mode and configure app and window filters. You can choose to either include or exclude only selected windows or applications. If you choose to include or exclude apps, you will be able to further filter the captured content by configuring both app and window filters.
By default, the framerate of the live video preview is limited to 10 frames per second for optimal performance. This does not affect the actual recording framerate.
You can adjust the preview framerate from the application settings, accessible by clicking on the settings button at the top right corner of the main window.
The countdown timer that appears right before the application starts recording can be disabled in the settings. You can access the configuration by clicking on the settings button at the top right corner of the main window.
